Dailypic 2/8/11: Dharavi

The Dharavi Slums are home to 1 million people who manage to co-exhaust and a few even to thrive with this 1 square mile of squalor within Mumbai.

We toured the slums with the guidance of Zeeshan (below), who himself lives in Dharavi and is now studying science in junior college and wants to be a cop one day.

The slum tour is both depressing and inspiring. Among many examples of human ingenuity (Its small businesses turnover half a billion annually) is the overwhelming sense of despair that come with living in inhumane conditions. Optimistically, many who make it out are driven to give back and support the community.
